If you dress sets for a living, you already know the drill: every piece of art that ends up in frame gets questions from clearance. Here is how we make those questions easy to answer.
The two rights every decorator deals with
Buying a print and filming a print are two different things.
The object. A lawfully purchased print, poster or canvas can be rented, hung and hauled to set. That part is simple, and it is the part a rental covers.
The image. Putting that artwork on screen means reproducing the image, and that right stays with the artist or rights holder no matter who owns the frame. This is why your clearance coordinator asks about the painting and not about the receipt.
Most “art clearance problems” on set come from mixing those two up. We do not mix them up.
Why your production cares
- E&O insurance. Distributors and streamers require errors and omissions coverage, and recognizable artwork on screen is one of the standard flags insurers look at.
- Clearance review. Studio and network legal teams check what set dec puts in frame. A piece that cannot be cleared gets swapped, reshot or blurred.
- The cost of guessing wrong. Blurring in post, re-dressing for pickups or settling a claim all cost more than renting the right piece on day one.
